BIG BUSINESS. SIMPLE SOLUTIONS

Helping other businesses in an increasingly tech-friendly climate led to the formation of a thriving business on its own. ManageEngine is used by major organizations as their go-to IT management software firm today. President Raj Sabhlok talks about the company’s impressive portfolio, the unique products on offer, and their efforts to increase tech education.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS MANAGEENGINE’S SPECIALTY? WHAT KIND OF CLIENTS ARE YOU GENERALLY DEALING WITH?

ManageEngine is known for providing comprehensive, easy-to-use IT management solutions that offer a superior return on investment. We have built our portfolio of IT management products from the ground up (unlike most of our competitors, who achieve their breadth of offerings through mergers and acquisitions). ManageEngine is a R&D focused company. In fact, our strategy has been to build the best products possible and let them do their own sales and marketing through unparalleled quality. All of our products are available for organizations to evaluate freely for one month. They use it, like it, and most often come back to us for the license. We also believe in nurturing the IT ecosystem—most ManageEngine products have a lifetime free version for a limited number of users or devices.

ManageEngine has built a healthy customer base of over 120,000 customers worldwide, including sixty percent of all Fortune 500 companies. In the Middle East, most major companies in all industry verticals run on ManageEngine: Etihad Airways, Flydubai, Dubai Trade, Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Airports, Dubai Smart Government, Al Futtaim Technologies, Dubai World Trade Center, Sharjah HR department, RAKBANK, ADCB, Mashreq Bank, Khimji, Averda, Commercial Bank of Dubai, Lamprell, Zulekha Healthcare Group, NMC Healthcare, Abu Dhabi Educational Council, and more, are long-time customers.

YOU HAVE A RATHER INTERESTING FREE TOOLS PORTFOLIO. WHAT DOES IT ENTAIL?

The free tools portfolio can be broken down to three segments: Troubleshooting tools, Windows management and virtualization monitoring tools, and the free editions of all premium products.

Our free tools require continuous development, as they have to be compatible with the changes, upgrades, and new hardware and software in the market. Otherwise, the purpose of enabling free IT for budding businesses would be defeated. When these businesses expand, we like to be in the race or even a hands-down winner when it comes to larger IT management deployments. It is a win-win for both the emerging business and ManageEngine. This model has been viable so far and we are positive that it will continue to remain relevant in the years to come, as long as we keep pace with industry changes. We have all key areas in the IT management arena covered with our breadth of free tools and the power of our freemium editions. Further, our user community provides a lot of room for users to connect with their peers and partners for all free and premium tools.

IN TODAY’S ADVANCED IT ENVIRONMENT, WHAT GOES INTO MAINTAINING A SAFE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR A COMPANY?

Regardless of the size or type, IT organizations must have intuitively designed security. It is a continuous process and should evolve with emerging trends. This involves a complex set of activities: defining information ownership, access control policies, encryption infrastructure, continuous monitoring of systems and usage, auditing of actions, proactive and reactive alerting, and forensics capabilities. Both internal and external threat sources should be treated on the same scale. ManageEngine keeps pace with emerging trends on all these aspects.

ManageEngine has already opened up the normalized log database of its SIEM and log management solution EventLog Analyzer for integration with any third-party  application. EventLog Analyzer’s API lets security administrators feed reams of normalized log data into any third-party application, including crowd-sourced threat intelligence solutions, vulnerability assessment platforms, business intelligence tools, or even custom applications for advanced security intelligence and threat protection.

WOULD YOU SAY COMPANIES ARE MORE AWARE TODAY THAN A DECADE AGO ABOUT CYBER SECURITY ISSUES?

Absolutely. Protecting our technology infrastructure may be the highest priority for companies. As we all know privacy and data breaches can lead to loss of business and reputation. We've seen the responsibility and focus of IT security extend beyond the CIO to the CEO, and even the Board. In fact, we've seen CEO's that have lost their jobs because of security lapses. From a government perspective, cyberattacks are the new form of terrorism. Terrorists are not only using technology as a recruitment tool but also as a way to spread propaganda. They are looking to take out electric grids and financial systems in an effort to wreak havoc on nations. All of this has led to a heightened awareness on things related to cyber security.

WHICH ONE IS EASIER TO MANAGE: A FORTUNE 500 COMPANY OR A BURGEONING SME?

The relative effort is the same. The complexity of managing and securing a F500 may be greater than a small business, but the resources of a larger firm should also be greater. On the other hand, in many cases, an SME doesn't have the resources or sophistication to properly manage and secure its IT infrastructure. So, on a relative basis, IT management and security is a burden that all sizes of companies must bear equally.

MANAGEENGINE ALSO HOSTS TRAINING PROGRAMS. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST VALUABLE IDEAS THAT YOU WANT YOUR TRAINEES TO KNOW?

ManageEngine user conferences, seminars, and training events are great forums for customers to learn and exchange best practices. They are also excellent opportunities for us, as a company, to learn about the IT challenges specific to a given region and improve our products in response. Our products are backed by impeccable customer support, and training offers customers another avenue to master our software and, ultimately, manage their IT in the most secure, simple, fast, and efficient manner possible.

Our strategy is to equip regional partners - our ground soldiers - to promptly and effectively address customer requirements. ManageEngine partners have ManageEngine certified technicians that can provide consultation, training, and implementation services. In addition to this, partners in the region are trained to provide level one and two end-user technical support. We provide our partners with direct support and support tools so they can provide comprehensive support to customers in the region.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WORKING FOR A FIRM LIKE MANAGEENGINE?

My favorite part about working at ManageEngine is that I get to be on the forefront of enterprise computing. As a technology person, there is nothing more exciting than helping companies be able to adopt new technology to better their business.
