Excellent safety record

Christian Marx, Business Director, DuPont Protection Technologies sheds light on Dupont’s safety and protection solutions that are helping to improve workplace culture and safety performance.

Q. How do you minimize risks and provide safety solution?

A. For more than 200 years, DuPont has made the protection and well-being of its employees a core part of the way it does business. Our company is known for protection technology, with products such as Kevlar®, Nomex®, and Tyvek®. Because of our excellent safety record and long safety heritage corporately, we developed a consulting business called DuPont Sustainable Solutions.  We take great pride in offering safety solutions to our people in DuPont and people elsewhere. We innovate and collaborate with companies, governments, industrial manufacturers, and academics to develop and test our advanced materials.

Q. What kind of trainings do you offer for corporates and individuals that apply your solutions?

A. Our DuPont Sustainable Solutions business leads the transformation of workplaces and work cultures around the world to help them become safer, more efficient, and environmentally sustainable. Our safety consultants can also help improve performance, develop employee skills, and minimize risk. In the area of personal protective garments, our local teams provide guidance around standards, risk assessment and a consultative approach so they can choose the appropriate garment that matches their operational needs.

Q. Could you give us more details about your product “Nomex”?

A. DuPont™ Nomex® fiber has offered thermal protection around the world for four decades. It is used in products to protect people who work against fire hazards such as firefighters, civil defense and those working across the manufacturing, chemical and oil and gas industries.

We are continually making refinements and improvements to our existing technologies. For example, we recently developed superior firefighter turnout gear that uses modern membrane technology that allows body vapor to escape, preventing fatigue and overheating. It was designed specifically for this region.

In addition to personal protection, Nomex® is used in mass transit systems, wind energy, transformers, filtration, hoses and aircraft.

Q. What are its main features?

A. Nomex® is an inherently flame-resistant, high-temperature fiber that will not melt, drip or support combustion in air. It also delivers outstanding resistance to a broad range of chemicals and is offered in paper, felt, fabric and fiber forms.

Q. Why is it the first choice for workers and emergency response professionals?

A. DuPont™ Nomex® has been a trusted fiber for over 40 years and DuPont is recognized as a global leader in safety and protection. Testing of DuPont fibers goes on our Thermo-Man® testing lab puts garments made of Nomex® fiber through a rigorous series of fire scenarios that simulate real-life situations — making it one of the most advanced thermal burn injury evaluation devices in the world.

Q. In your opinion, are governments in the Middle East raising awareness about applying safety and protection solutions at workplaces?

A. DuPont is collaborating with government agencies to help raise awareness about safety and protection solutions in the workplace. We decided to install our Thermo-Man® testing unit in the UAE (the third of its kind outside the US and Europe), where we have a close collaboration with Dubai Civil Defiance. We provide testing, validation and evaluation of various solutions to help our customers’ products maintain the highest level of safety and protection in the UAE. We anticipate that Thermo-Man® will enhance local government ability to assess various work hazards and enable them to maintain the highest level of safety and protection as they respond to various emergency situations across the Emirate.

Q. What are your next steps within this sector?

A. As the world develops, humanity places greater value on life. DuPont is uniquely positioned to address the rising demand of safety. We are committed to solving critical challenges through DuPont science and innovation. Leveraging the Thermo-Man® across the region is a good example of how we are elevating our presence and investment in the region fulfilling local needs of safety conscious markets.”
