A new level of intelligence and connectivity

In an exclusive interview with Capital Business, Osama Shihabi, Director of Sales, Middle East Region, Motorola Solutions talks about the overall public safety market in the Middle East and how Motorola Solutions is enabling safer cities in an environment that is being impacted by secure and resilient networks.

How do you measure the growth of communication networks in the Middle East when compared to the US and Europe?

We target private networks for military, public safety, transports, oil & gas and other sectors.  Basically, customers who are seeking resilient, mission critical communication networks. The measurement of the growth is linked to the complexity of operations, number of individuals requiring the service and growth in their industry. The Middle East is a key market for us. It has been growing steadily in all sectors, while the market in US and Europe matured with standard growth that is easier to project.

How is Motorola helping government agencies in the region through its AME 2000?

With AME 2000, users will have a smartphone for secure communications whenever and wherever they want. As government executives, intelligence agents and military personnel increasingly adopt commercial devices to perform their missions, it is crucial that the equipment is capable of communicating and accessing sensitive information securely and confidentially. AME 2000 integrates a commercial Android smartphone with hardware and software to provide end-to-end encrypted voice and data communications through private or public wireless networks.

With AME 2000, Motorola Solutions has built a platform, which is a truly global secure solution because it has the ability to comply with a variety of standards and guidelines established by governments around the world. AME 2000 features a familiar Android-based OS experience and is an affordable mobile solution for government agencies to access secure information over the air. We believe AME 2000 will become the secure mobile solution of choice for governments across the region.

How is Motorola Solutions enabling safer cities in an environment impacted by secure and strong networks?

As market leader in the public safety communications, our solutions help transform government and public safety organizations by:

  • Enabling them to collect and unify the information flowing between citizens, responders and agencies,
  • Making it actionable, and
  • Securely distributing it across mission critical devices and easy-to-manage networks.

Public safety technology is moving into a more interactive phase today where voice communication is being combined with video and data abilities into a single operational view so that responders and agencies can move from just reacting to intelligent prediction.

Our public safety solutions help agencies to unify communications through intelligent networks and devices, effectively capture information, and turn intelligent data into faster, safer, more proactive, and smarter response strategies. Ultimately, what differentiates Motorola Solutions from others is the deep understanding we have of the needs of the public safety users not just in our country but also across the world.

What is your opinion about the overall public safety market in the Middle East with all the new technologies being developed?

We see strong growth in public safety in the region with broad acceptance of Tetra as a mainstream technology for public safety.

A number of trends are fueling TETRA network build in critical communications markets in the region. The technology’s reliability, voice performance, data capabilities, and, in some cases, the advanced encryption deliver the levels of performance required by critical communications users in airports, rail systems, oil and gas markets, and more.

In oil and gas in particular, the availability of intrinsically safe ATEX radios, which can be used in potentially explosive environments, has increased investment in TETRA. Also, remote monitoring systems that can use the TETRA network to continually health-check systems and critical national infrastructure are helping to increase safety and reduce maintenance costs.

At the same time, there is also growing interest from public safety agencies in the Middle East to operate private LTE networks given the focus of telecom operators across the Middle East region that are adopting LTE to explore options for bolstering data-carrying capacity. Given our innovative offerings, Motorola Solutions sees great potential in using 4G mobile broadband technologies, to deliver unprecedented access to real-time, multimedia information anywhere, anytime for public safety agencies in the Middle East.

You have recently participated at Critical Communications Middle East, tell us about the solutions you were showcasing at the event?

At Critical Communications Middle East, we unveiled a suite of solutions designed to improve emergency response and decision-making capabilities of public safety agencies in the Middle East. These innovative solutions range from a versatile range of Terrestrial Trunked Radios (TETRA), a fully operational concept connected patrol car that represents the emergency vehicle of the future, and a next-generation Intelligent Data Portal that makes accessing critical information easier and allows for multi-agency collaboration.

As the imperative for public safety and security continues to grow in modern societies, having greater mobility and instant access to mission-critical information has become vital to making potentially life-saving decisions. The diverse range of solutions we showcased at Critical Communications Middle East helps leverage mobility technology advances to enable a new level of intelligence and connectivity in the field in order to coordinate a better response and improve decision-making capabilities of public safety professionals.

Some of the solutions we displayed are as follows:

·         The MTP3000 and MTP6000 TETRA radio series have been created to drive safer, smarter and faster frontline operations. This family of radios addresses diverse end-user needs and delivers assured communications through industry leading audio and coverage performance. We also showcased our ATEX-certified radios which are also optimized for hazardous oil and gas environments.

·         Motorola’s connected police car heralds a new era of mobility in emergency services. Based on years of research, ride-alongs, focus groups, simulations and usability studies, the car is designed to seamlessly integrate with the first responder’s personal mobile communication network and workflow, extending critical information from command and control to mobile users and enhancing safety and operational efficiency in the field.

·         The new Intelligent Data Portal from Motorola Solutions provides public safety agencies and commercial services with a simple way to access their data in the field from multiple databases across different mobile devices and networks. IDP is a mobile, cloud-based application that gathers contextual information from existing databases; it then organizes and maps it using role-based layers to show the location and context of people, resources, events and developing situations.

How can your solutions improve decision-making capabilities of public safety professionals?

Within the information flowing between citizens, responders and agencies constitute the intelligence that builds safer cities. Motorola Solutions is helping agencies collect more of it, make it actionable and securely distribute it with the world’s first mission critical, multi-net operating environment.

It allows public safety professionals to securely and seamlessly transition between radio and broadband networks, private or public. It unifies the data sources and services that enable next generation mobile applications, and dynamically prioritizes the information that matters most, to the people who need it most.  It is also built on a flexible and migratable open architecture that is simple to manage. Below are some salient points how Motorola creates a Unified Mission Critical Environment.

UNIFIED DATA

·         One Operating View unifies information sources such as location, tracking, presence, video feeds and disparate data sources to enable better collaborative actions.

·         Unified Management provides visibility and control across all dimensions of the unified communications network while preserving the requirements of every agency and each user.

DYNAMIC INTELLIGENCE

·         Real-Time and Predictive Analytics help turn information into intelligence and target delivery to the right users for better decisions and actions.

·         Context Aware Communications use responders’ environment, incident and personal context to prioritize network resources and optimize their user interfaces for the situation.

MISSION CRITICAL PERFORMANCE

·         Always Connected to critical voice and data communications, roaming seamlessly and securely across standards-based radio and broadband, private or public, for pervasive coverage.

·         Trusted Security through an end-to-end security framework offering concentric rings of protection and a security-enhanced, hardened architecture to secure sensitive communications.

What are your future plans in the region?

The Middle East region is a key high growth market for Motorola.  We anticipate continued growth in government investments in public safety aimed at enhancing the safety and security especially with the current political challenges. We also expect investments in verticals such as oil & gas and transport, as we have already seen the launch of several key projects in the region for expansion in oil fields, pipelines and refineries, railways and other sectors.
