Thought-Provoking New Book ‘The Energy Budget’ outlines future for Energy

“Global Warming is the biggest failure of the human race.” So says world-renowned energy expert George Berbari in his new book ‘The Energy Budget’, which was launched last night (Wednesday) in a grand ceremony at the RODA Murooj.

More than 250 people, including distinguished guests such as H.E. Sami Nmeir, Lebanon’s Counsel General in Dubai, Dr. Khalid Omar Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Media City, municipal figures, sustainability champions and leading members of the UAE and international media, were in attendance to hear ‘The Energy Budget’ author talk passionately about what he feels is the culmination of his life’s work and why it is crucial for world leaders and governments to absorb energy budgets into economic plans.

In his stimulating text, Berbari, who has pioneered district cooling, Tri-Generation and integrated renewables technologies in the Middle East, argues that the current energy model in which multiple utility companies charge end users without any concern for sustainability has put the world in danger and must change.

Speaking at the launch, the author said: “I have carried out extensive work in the energy sector and have pioneered many new technologies. My goal has always been to improve energy efficiency and protect our precious environment, yet my efforts and the collective efforts of all environmentalists worldwide are not sufficient to stop Global Warming. There is despair, but there is also hope. Humans have been entrusted with the only beautiful blue planet that supports life.

“I felt it was my duty to do something and find solutions to this disaster. The purpose of ‘The Energy Budget’ was to document a well-structured, self-financed, long-term plan to solve Global Warming.”

Since graduating from the American University of Beirut (AUB) with a Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering, Berbari has worked tirelessly in pioneering Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) across the Middle East. He played a leading role in bringing District Cooling to the region and has led new technologies in air conditioning and power generation.

Prior to launching DC Pro, Berbari was a founding member of the National Central Cooling Company (Tabreed), one of the world’s largest district cooling providers.

Through the measured approach in the early chapters of ‘The Energy Budget’, Berbari illustrates how energy is generated and utilised. In the fourth chapter the author summarises the development of district energy and the role it plays in the future in integrating renewables, bio fuels, hydrogen and thermal storage water as one of the best solutions for the storage of renewables.

The outspoken author address the future of energy and water metering, outlining a plan that would see a single independent entity measuring and benchmarking utilities. The final chapter breaks down the author’s Energy Budget Plan where every country, city, town and factory will have a specific energy budget. That budget would not be set by politicians but by independent elected or appointed energy governors - similar to a Central Bank Governor - which will be transcended to every home, commercial building, factory and transportation body.

The ‘Energy Budget’ proposes to reward efficiency by providing lower rates and penalise inefficiency with higher rates, the author insists. He stresses that under his plan, this wouldn’t be a revenue generator, but the whole population would benefit as the penalties would be used as a self-financing mechanism by each country or city to finance district energy in existing buildings and factories and fund research into the use of renewables, hydrogen and bio fuels.

The book can be purchased online at georgeberbari.com in three formats – e-book, hardback copy or paperback, or at Magrudy’s on Jumeirah Beach Road in Dubai.

As one of the world’s leading experts on the design of highly efficient energy systems, George Berbari has outlined a provocative prescription for managing the future of the world’s energy balance. The book is a culmination of his remarkable life’s journey and his profound abilities to wring out every last bit of thermal efficiency from a system design.  Applying his knowledge to macro-level policies can hopefully accomplish for the world what he has been able to achieve on the ground for complex commercial and industrial applications of energy efficiency.
